A prayer of the afflictedC
-
Hear me O God nor hide thy faceD
But answer lest I dieE
Hast thou not built a throne of graceD
To hear when sinners cryE
-
My days are wasted like the smokeF
Dissolving in the airG
My strength is dried my heart is brokeF
And sinking in despairG
-
My spirits flag like with'ring grassH
Burnt with excessive heatI
In secret groans my minutes passH
And I forget to eatI
-
As on some lonely building's topJ
The sparrow tells her moanK
Far from the tents of joy and hopeL
I sit and grieve aloneK
-
My soul is like a wildernessM
Where beasts of midnight howlN
There the sad raven finds her placeD
And there the screaming owlN
-
Dark dismal thoughts and boding fearsO
Dwell in my troubled breastP
While sharp reproaches wound my earsO
Nor give my spirit restP
-
My cup is mingled with my woesQ
And tears are my repastP
My daily bread like ashes growsQ
Unpleasant to my tasteP
-
Sense can afford no real joyR
To souls that feel thy frownS
Lord 'twas thy hand advanced me highE
Thy hand hath cast me downS
-
My looks like withered leaves appearT
And life's declining lightP
Grows faint as evening shadows areU
That vanish into nightP
-
But thou for ever art the sameV
O my eternal GodP
Ages to come shall know thy nameV
And spread thy works abroadP
-
Thou wilt arise and show thy faceD
Nor will my Lord delayW
Beyond th' appointed hour of graceD
That long expected dayW
-
He hears his saints he knows their cryE
And by mysterious waysX
Redeems the pris'ners doomed to dieE
And fills their tongues with praiseX
