Hymn 57 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A B CDEF GHGH IJKJ LMLM NONO PQRQ SPSA TUVW

Original sinA
-
Rom etc Psa JobB
-
Backward with humble shame we lookC
On our originalD
How is our nature dashed and brokeE
In our first father's fallF
-
To all that's good averse and blindG
But prone to all that's illH
What dreadful darkness veils our mindG
How obstinate our willH
-
Conceived in sin O wretched stateI
Before we draw our breathJ
The first young pulse begins to beatK
Iniquity and deathJ
-
How strong in our degen'rate bloodL
The old corruption reignsM
And mingling with the crooked floodL
Wanders through all our veinsM
-
Wild and unwholesome as the rootN
Will all the branches beO
How can we hope for living fruitN
From such a deadly treeO
-
What mortal power from things uncleanP
Can pure productions bringQ
Who can command a vital streamR
From an infected springQ
-
Yet mighty God thy wondrous loveS
Can make our nature cleanP
While Christ and grace prevail aboveS
The tempter death and sinA
-
The second Adam shall restoreT
The ruins of the firstU
Hosannah to that sovereign powerV
That new creates our dustW
