Hymn 5 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A B CDEF GHII JKCK IJLJ AMNM

Submission to afflictive providencesA
-
JobB
-
Naked as from the earth we cameC
And crept to life at firstD
We to the earth return againE
And mingle with our dustF
-
The dear delights we here enjoyG
And fondly call our ownH
Are but short favors borrowed nowI
To be repaid anonI
-
'Tis God that lifts our comforts highJ
Or sinks them in the graveK
He gives and blessed be his nameC
He takes but what he gaveK
-
Peace all our angry passions thenI
Let each rebellious sighJ
Be silent at his sovereign willL
And every murmur dieJ
-
If smiling mercy crown our livesA
Its praises shall be spreadM
And we'll adore the justice tooN
That strikes our comforts deadM
