Hymn 46 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBC DEFE GHGH IAIA JEKL BMBN GOGP

God's condescension to human affairsA
-
Up to the Lord that reigns on highB
And views the nations from afarC
Let everlasting praises flyB
And tell how large his bounties areC
-
He that can shake the worlds he madeD
Or with his word or with his rodE
His goodness how amazing greatF
And what a condescending GodE
-
God that must stoop to view the skiesG
And bow to see what angels doH
Down to our earth he casts his eyesG
And bends his footsteps downwards tooH
-
He overrules all mortal thingsI
And manages our mean affairsA
On humble souls the King of kingsI
Bestows his counsels and his caresA
-
Our sorrows and our tears we pourJ
Into the bosom of our GodE
He hears us in the mournful hourK
And helps us bear the heavy loadL
-
In vain might lofty princes tryB
Such condescension to performM
For worms were never raised so highB
Above their meanest fellow wormN
-
O could our thankful hearts deviseG
A tribute equal to thy graceO
To the third heav'n our songs should riseG
And teach the golden harps thy praiseP
