Hymn 44 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDE FGHG IJIJ KLKL MAMA NOPO

Hell or The vengeance of GodA
-
With holy fear and humble songB
The dreadful God our souls adoreC
Rev'rence and awe become the tongueD
That speaks the terrors of his powerE
-
Far in the deep where darkness dwellsF
The land of horror and despairG
Justice has built a dismal hellH
And laid her stores of vengeance thereG
-
Eternal plagues and heavy chainsI
Tormenting racks and fiery coalsJ
And darts t' inflict immortal painsI
Dyed in the blood of damned soulsJ
-
There Satan the first sinner liesK
And roars and bites his iron bandsL
In vain the rebel strives to riseK
Crushed with the weight of both thy handsL
-
There guilty ghosts of Adam's raceM
Shriek out and howl beneath thy rodA
Once they could scorn a Savior's graceM
But they incensed a dreadful GodA
-
Tremble my soul and kiss the SonN
Sinners obey the Savior's callO
Else your damnation hastens onP
And hell gapes wide to wait your fallO
