Hymn 23 Part 2 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A B CDEF GHGH IJKJ LMLM NOPO QRQR

A hopeful youth falling short of heavenA
-
MarkB
-
Must all the charms of nature thenC
So hopeless to salvation proveD
Can hell demand can heav'n condemnE
The man whom Jesus deigns to loveF
-
The man who sought the ways of truthG
Paid friends and neighbors all their dueH
A modest sober lovely youthG
And thought he wanted nothing newH
-
But mark the change thus spake the LordI
Come part with earth for heav'n todayJ
The youth astonished at the wordK
In silent sadness went his wayJ
-
Poor virtues that he boasted soL
This test unable to endureM
Let Christ and grace and glory goL
To make his land and money sureM
-
Ah foolish choice of treasures hereN
Ah fatal love of tempting goldO
Must this base world be bought so dearP
Are life and heav'n so cheaply soldO
-
In vain the charms of nature shineQ
If this vile passion govern meR
Transform my soul O love divineQ
And make me part with all for theeR
