Hymn 170 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BBCD EEFF GGBB HHIJ KKLM NNOO PQRR STUU

God incomprehensible and sovereignA
-
Can creatures to perfection findB
Th' eternal uncreated MindB
Or can the largest stretch of thoughtC
Measure and search his nature outD
-
'Tis high as heav'n 'tis deep as hellE
And what can mortals know or tellE
His glory spreads beyond the skyF
And all the shining worlds on highF
-
But man vain man would fain be wiseG
Born like a wild young colt he fliesG
Through all the follies of his mindB
And swells and snuffs the empty windB
-
God is a King of power unknownH
Firm are the orders of his throneH
If he resolve who dares opposeI
Or ask him why or what he doesJ
-
He wounds the heart and he makes wholeK
He calms the tempest of the soulK
When he shuts up in long despairL
Who can remove the heavy barM
-
He frowns and darkness veils the moonN
The fainting sun grows dim at noonN
The pillars of heav'n's starry roofO
Tremble and start at his reproofO
-
He gave the vaulted heav'n its formP
The crooked serpent and the wormQ
He breaks the billows with his breathR
And smites the sons of pride to deathR
-
These are a portion of his waysS
But who shall dare describe his faceT
Who can endure his light or standU
To hear the thunders of his handU
