Hymn 161 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBC DEDE FGEH IJIC KEKE LEME

Christian virtues or The difficulty of conversionA
-
Strait is the way the door is straitB
That leads to joys on highC
'Tis but a few that find the gateB
While crowds mistake and dieC
-
Beloved self must be deniedD
The mind and will renewedE
Passion suppressed and patience triedD
And vain desires subduedE
-
Flesh is a dangerous foe to graceF
Where it prevails and rulesG
Flesh must be humbled pride abasedE
Lest they destroy our soulsH
-
The love of gold be banished henceI
That vile idolatryJ
And every member every senseI
in sweet subjection lieC
-
The tongue that most unruly powerK
Requires a strong restraintE
We must be watchful every hourK
And pray but never faintE
-
Lord can a feeble helpless wormL
Fulfil a task so hardE
Thy grace must all my work performM
And give the free rewardE
