Hymn 153 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDE FGFG AHIH JKJK LMNM OKPK

The distemper folly and madness of sinA
-
Sin like a venomous diseaseB
Infects our vital bloodC
The only balm is sovereign graceD
And the physician GodE
-
Our beauty and our strength are fledF
And we draw near to deathG
But Christ the Lord recalls the deadF
With his almighty breathG
-
Madness by nature reigns withinA
The passions burn and rageH
Till God's own Son with skill divineI
The inward fire assuageH
-
We lick the dust we grasp the windJ
And solid good despiseK
Such is the folly of the mindJ
Till Jesus makes us wiseK
-
We give our souls the wounds they feelL
We drink the pois'nous gallM
And rush with fury down to hellN
But Heav'n prevents the fallM
-
The man possessed among the tombsO
Cuts his own flesh and criesK
He foams and raves till Jesus comesP
And the foul spirit fliesK
