Characters of Christ borrowed from inanimate things in ScriptureA
-
Go worship at Immanuel's feetB
See in his face what wonders meetB
Earth is too narrow to expressC
His worth his glory or his graceD
-
The whole creation can affordE
But some faint shadows of my LordE
Nature to make his beauties knownF
Must mingle colors not her ownF
-
Is he compared to wine or breadG
Dear Lord our souls would thus be fedG
That flesh that dying blood of thineH
Is bread of life is heav'nly wineH
-
Is he a tree The world receivesI
Salvation from his healing leavesI
That righteous branch that fruitful boughJ
Is David's root and offspring tooK
-
Is he a rose Not Sharon yieldsL
Such fragrancy in all her fieldsL
Or if the lily he assumeM
The valleys bless the rich perfumeM
-
Is he a vine His heav'nly rootN
Supplies the boughs with life and fruitN
O let a lasting union joinO
My soul the branch to Christ the vineH
-
Is he the head Each member livesP
And owns the vital powers he givesP
The saints below and saints aboveQ
Joined by his Spirit and his loveQ
-
Is he a fountain There I batheR
And heal the plague of sin and deathS
These waters all my soul renewK
And cleanse my spotted garments tooK
-
Is he a fire He'll purge my drossT
But the true gold sustains no lossT
Like a refiner shall he sitU
And tread the refuse with his feetB
-
Is he a rock How firm he provesV
The Rock of ages never movesV
Yet the sweet streams that from him flowW
Attend us all the desert throughK
-
Is he a way He leads to GodX
The path is drawn in lines of bloodY
There would I walk with hope and zealZ
Till I arrive at Zion's hillA2
-
Is he a door I'll enter inB2
Behold the pastures large and greenC2
A paradise divinely fairD2
None but the sheep have freedom thereD2
-
Is he designed the corner stoneF
For men to build their heav'n uponE2
I'll make him my foundation tooK
Nor fear the plots of hell belowW
-
Is he a temple I adoreF2
Th' indwelling majesty and powerA
And still to this most holy placeD
Whene'er I pray I turn my faceD
-
Is he a star He breaks the nightG2
Piercing the shades with dawning lightG2
I know his glories from afarH2
I know the bright the morning starH2
-
Is he a sun His beams are graceD
His course is joy and righteousnessI2
Nations rejoice when he appearsJ2
To chase their clouds and dry their tearsK2
-
O let me climb those higher skiesL2
Where storms and darkness never riseL2
There he displays his power abroadM2
And shines and reigns th' incarnate GodX
-
Nor earth nor seas nor sun nor starsN2
Nor heav'n his full resemblance bearsK2
His beauties we can never traceD
Till we behold him face to faceD
