Hymn 140 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBD EFEF GHGH IJKJ LMLN OBOB PQPR

A living and a dead faith Collected from several scripturesA
-
Mistaken souls that dream of heav'nB
And make their empty boastC
Of inward joys and sins forgiv'nB
While they are slaves to lustD
-
Vain are our fancies airy flightsE
If faith be cold and deadF
None but a living power unitesE
To Christ the living headF
-
'Tis faith that changes all the heartG
'Tis faith that works by loveH
That bids all sinful joys departG
And lifts the thoughts aboveH
-
'Tis faith that conquers earth and hellI
By a celestial powerJ
This is the grace that shall prevailK
In the decisive hourJ
-
Faith must obey her Father's willL
As well as trust his graceM
A pard'ning God is jealous stillL
For his own holinessN
-
When from the curse he sets us freeO
He makes our natures cleanB
Nor would he send his Son to beO
The minister of sinB
-
His Spirit purifies our frameP
And seals our peace with GodQ
Jesus and his salvation cameP
By water and by bloodR
