Hymn 134 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A B CDEE FFGA BHII JKLL

Religion vain without loveA
-
CorB
-
Had I the tongues of Greeks and JewsC
And nobler speech that angels useD
If love be absent I am foundE
Like tinkling brass an empty soundE
-
Were I inspired to preach and tellF
All that is done in heav'n and hellF
Or could my faith the world removeG
Still I am nothing without loveA
-
Should I distribute all my storeB
To feed the bowels of the poorH
Or give my body to the flameI
To gain a martyr's glorious nameI
-
If love to God and love to menJ
Be absent all my hopes are vainK
Nor tongues nor gifts nor fiery zealL
The work of love can e'er fulfilL
