Hymn 131 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A B CDEFGG FFAA FFFF EFAA

The Pharisee and publicanA
-
Luke ffB
-
Saints at your heav'nly Father's wordC
Give up your comforts to the LordD
Behold how sinners disagreeE
The publican and PhariseeF
One doth his righteousness proclaimG
The other owns his guilt and shameG
-
This man at humble distance standsF
And cries for grace with lifted handsF
That boldly rises near the throneA
And talks of duties he has doneA
-
The Lord their diff'rent language knowsF
And diff'rent answers he bestowsF
The humble soul with grace he crownsF
Whilst on the proud his anger frownsF
-
Dear Father let me never beE
Joined with the boasting PhariseeF
I have no merits of my ownA
But plead the suff'rings of thy SonA
