Hymn 117 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A B CDAD EFEG HIHI JKLK MNMN OPQP RRCC JJST

Election sovereign and freeA
-
RomB
-
Behold the potter and the clayC
He forms his vessels as he pleaseD
Such is our God and such are weA
The subjects of his high decreesD
-
Doth not the workman's power extendE
O'er all the mass which part to chooseF
And mold it for a nobler endE
And which to leave for viler useG
-
May not the sovereign Lord on highH
Dispense his favors as he willI
Choose some to life while others dieH
And yet be just and gracious stillI
-
What if to make his terror knownJ
He lets his patience long endureK
Suff'ring vile rebels to go onL
And seal their own destruction sureK
-
What if he means to show his graceM
And his electing love employsN
To mark out some of mortal raceM
And form them fit for heav'nly joysN
-
Shall man reply against the LordO
And call his Maker's ways unjustP
The thunder of whose dreadful wordQ
Can crush a thousand worlds to dustP
-
But O my soul if truths so brightR
Should dazzle and confound thy sightR
Yet still his written will obeyC
And wait the great decisive dayC
-
Then shall he make his justice knownJ
And the whole world before his throneJ
With joy or terror shall confessS
The glory of his righteousnessT
