Hymn 116 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A B CDED FGHI JHJH KLAM

Love to God and our neighborA
-
MattB
-
Thus saith the first the great commandC
Let all thy inward powers uniteD
To love thy Maker and thy GodE
With utmost vigor and delightD
-
Then shall thy neighbor next in placeF
Share thine affections and esteemG
And let thy kindness to thyselfH
Measure and rule thy love to himI
-
This is the sense that Moses spokeJ
This did the prophets preach and proveH
For want of this the law is brokeJ
And the whole law's fulfilled by loveH
-
But O how base our passions areK
How cold our charity and zealL
Lord fill our souls with heav'nly fireA
Or we shall ne'er perform thy willM
