Alas and did my Savior bleedA
And did my Sovereign dieB
Would He devote that sacred headC

RefrainD
-
At the cross at the cross where I first saw the lightE
And the burden of my heart rolled awayF
It was there by faith I received my sightE
And now I am happy all the dayF
-
-
Thy body slain sweet Jesus ThineG
And bathed in its own bloodH
While the firm mark of wrath divineG
His Soul in anguish stoodI
-
Was it for crimes that I had doneJ
He groaned upon the treeK
Amazing pity grace unknownL
And love beyond degreeK
-
Well might the sun in darkness hideM
And shut his glories inN
When Christ the mighty Maker diedM
For man the creature s sinN
-
Thus might I hide my blushing faceO
While His dear cross appearsP
Dissolve my heart in thankfulnessP
And melt my eyes to tearsP
-
But drops of grief can ne er repayF
The debt of love I oweQ
Here Lord I give my self awayF
Tis all that I can doR
