Lain across the grown grass | B |
Having quieted down | C |
As the evening hours pass | B |
- | |
Your warrior arms bear | A |
No dual blade of class | B |
A face without a frown | C |
With fate like brittle glass | B |
- | |
Cold winds begin to near | D |
Our open place of stay | E |
While your white supple skin | F |
Is turning bluish gray | E |
- | |
My gallant comrade dear | D |
Confidant If I may | E |
I now wish to begin | F |
These untold things to say | E |
- | |
Few aged but young we were | G |
When our metal helms hid | H |
Mugs of utter disgrace | I |
Freedom wardens forbid | H |
- | |
Death servants dare deter | G |
With sword in hand to bid | H |
For our lives resurface | J |
The spirits intrepid | K |
- | |
Scorn and disdain in mind | L |
For gold is a far dream | M |
Thoughts of it down it weighs | N |
Past a weakening seam | M |
- | |
Shackled in black steel bind | L |
Dead to them so we seem | M |
Wickedly kill our ways | N |
To make our blood not teem | M |
- | |
And so we fought and fought | O |
Enraged by a sliver | G |
Of a hope that one day | E |
Life be brought by giver | G |
- | |
So to pay for us bought | P |
With some gold silver | G |
Now with faith thrown away | E |
Be giving avenger | G |
- | |
Then we two took our trek | Q |
Past some forest of green | R |
Once you swore to follow | S |
Your prided instinct keen | R |
- | |
You heed my call beck | Q |
As knight you slowly glean | R |
My forced princely hollow | S |
Endeavors at fourteen | R |
- | |
I knew not the noble | T |
For we were only slave | U |
To hallowed crown steel | V |
And pompous wealthy wave | U |
- | |
We try to be humble | T |
Walk along as we pave | U |
Still I know how to kill | W |
Of which I cannot stave | U |
- | |
I had been threatened by | X |
Ministerial jester | G |
To live the dead man's words | Y |
Of laughingstock joker | G |
- | |
Paint an embellished lie | X |
Act a rough demeanor | G |
In tune with prattling birds | Y |
Dunce of a fence sitter | G |
- | |
As such I have lost sight | Z |
Of the currently unknown | A2 |
But golden signs of seeds | B2 |
Sprout later to be sown | A2 |
- | |
Your will oh what might | Z |
Strayed I would be alone | A2 |
True be guardian deeds | B2 |
Kind to the weakest bone | A2 |
- | |
We now face capital | T |
And foolish fake father | G |
His boorish attendants | C2 |
And frail royal candor | G |
- | |
Yet felled by general | T |
You stand up no longer | G |
Our men raise the pennants | C2 |
Salute to a soldier | G |
- | |
I for sure knew you not | P |
When we had first been | F |
Placed within a locked cage | D2 |
Strangers as we were seen | R |
- | |
But you had cared a lot | P |
Some time knelt as you mean | R |
To follow and engage | D2 |
As my steward serene | R |
- | |
Loyal to the young me | E2 |
While casual words gather | G |
When you are royal too | F2 |
As known to your mother | G |
- | |
Still you pledge in decree | E2 |
Though we were owned rather | G |
We delude and bend true | F2 |
To fool court oaf nature | G |
- | |
So I will not forget | G2 |
Our set bickers at noon | H2 |
Prince the apt liar and | I2 |
Counsel his nagging boon | H2 |
- | |
A few years apart yet | G2 |
Gone you are far too soon | H2 |
Foe teacher brother friend | J2 |
Real kin and fellow goon | H2 |
- | |
Again the winds have come | K2 |
As I bring your head near | D |
Close to my downcast chest | L2 |
Its heart I hope you hear | M2 |
- | |
And I will miss you some | K2 |
For beloved you are dear | D |
As my final request | L2 |
Please guide me still from here | M2 |

Poet's note: A Friend That Talks Back is a poem I finished writing on April 17, 2021. It is a piece inspired by the death of a character in a story I have been reading around that time. To me, it felt that the timing of it was very unfortunate. However, it led me to have another inspiration for writing.
