THOR draws a chord invisibleA
Across the shaking skyB
I hear the tearing of the shellC
The bullets sing and cryB
As charging through the flames of hellC
The batteries go byB
-
The gunners laugh about the taskD
That man to man has givenE
Like Titans now the guns unmaskD
And fire the veils of heavenE
Above the cloud what lights are gleamingF
God's batteries are thoseG
Or souls of soldiers homeward streamingF
To banquet with their foesG
The floods of battle ebb and flowH
The soldiers to Valhalla goH
-
They say that when the day awokeI
And the dying night was wanJ
Harry of England rode the smokeI
And led the English vanK
And bowmen in the battle glareL
Rose from the ghostly dewM
The clothyard sang upon the airL
And the grey goose feather flewM
Harry of England is awakeN
His archers mind not trench or stakeN
-
And men have seen the EmperorO
The Eagle of the SouthP
God grant the bonds be loosed by ThorQ
That bind that marble mouthP
The silver roads of conquest lieB
Fast frozen in his browR
Would those imperious lips were freeS
To give their orders nowR
The floods of battle ebb and flowH
The soldiers to Valhalla goH
-
Beyond the thunder of the gunsT
Beyond the flaming lineU
Far from this sky of echoing bronzeV
The English valleys shineU
The gardens moated in the woldsV
By wind and water kissedW
And dainty girls that England foldsV
In sunshine and in mistW
The floods of battle ebb and flowH
The soldiers to Valhalla goH
-
The fighting men go charging pastX
With the battle in their eyesV
The fighting men go reeling pastX
Like gods in poor disguiseV
And stumbling men whom none will seeV
No wife or mother moreQ
Winged with the wings of VictoryV
And helmeted by ThorQ
-
Above the cloud what lights are gleamingF
God's batteries are thoseV
Or souls of soldiers homeward streamingF
To banquet with their foesV
