The Fallen Subaltern Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH ABAB

The starshells float above the bayonets glistenA
We bear our fallen friend without a soundB
Below the waiting legions lie and listenA
To us who march upon their burial groundB
-
Wound in the flag of England here we lay himC
The guns will flash and thunder o er the graveD
What other winding sheet should now array himC
What other music should salute the braveD
-
As goes the Sun god in his chariot gloriousE
When all his golden banners are unfurledF
So goes the soldier fallen but victoriousE
And leaves behind a twilight in the worldF
-
And those who come this way in days hereafterG
Will know that here a boy for England fellH
Who looked at danger with the eyes of laughterG
And on the charge his days were ended wellH
-
One last salute the bayonets clash and glistenA
With arms reversed we go without a soundB
One more has joined the men who lie and listenA
To us who march upon their burial groundB
