The Fallen Spire [a Flemish Village] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHGH IJAJ

THE spire is gone that slept for centuriesA
Mirrored among the lilies calm and lowB
And now the water holds but empty skiesC
Through which the rivers of the thunder flowB
-
The church lies broken near the fallen spireD
For here among these old and human thingsE
Death sweeps along the street with feet of fireF
And goes upon his way with moaning wingsE
-
On pavements by the kneeling herdsmen wornG
The drifting fleeces of the shells are rolledH
Above the Saints a village Christ forlornG
Wounded again looks down upon his foldH
-
And silence follows fast no evening peaceI
But leaden stillness when the thunder wanesJ
Haunting the slender branches of the treesA
And settling low upon the listless plainsJ
