On A Troopship - 1915 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFGFHIHIJKLKFAREWELL the village leaning to the hill | A |
And all the cawing rooks that homeward fly | B |
The bees the drowsy anthem of the mill | A |
The willows winding under April sky | B |
We watch the breakers crashing on the bow | C |
And those far flashes in the Eastern haze | D |
The fields and friends that were are fainter now | C |
Than whispering of ancient waterways | D |
Now England stirs as stirs a dreamer wound | E |
In immemorial slumber lids apart | F |
Soon will she rouse her giant limbs attuned | G |
To that old music hidden at her heart | F |
The small occasions and the menial cries | H |
Fade fast away the little men beware | I |
She rises in her circuit of the skies | H |
An eagle drinking of the mountain air | I |
We come to harbour in the breath of wars | J |
Welcome again the land of our farewells | K |
In this strange ruin open to the stars | L |
We find the haven where her spirit dwells | K |
