UNDER the stars the armies lie asleepA
Between the lines a quiet river flowsB
Through brakes of honeysuckle and of roseB
And fields where poppies droop in languor deepA
The night as with a mantle now enfoldsB
The muffled forms upon the pasture lowC
The scent of thyme comes down across the woldsB
And on the roses of the dark hedgerowD
The summer starlight falls in flakes of silver snowC
-
Here from the wooded haunt of nymph and fawnE
The hidden guns peer forth across the hillsB
Their wheels are on the trampled daffodilsB
And so they wait the coming of the dawnE
In dappled shadows where the fairy weavesB
On grasses tall his web of sparkling laceB
The gunners lie their heads upon the sheavesB
White falls the moon on many a sunburnt faceB
That ere the day shall feel another God's embraceB
-
Among the barrows of the sunken plainF
Where sleep the soldiers of another dayG
On misty meadow and on upland grayG
On many eyes that close but once againH
The peaceful earth her benediction throwsB
The waves of healing music from the streamsB
That though the willows softly comes and goesB
And now the face of all the country seemsB
A mirror consecrated to an army's dreamsB
-
From far away is borne a woman's pray'rD
To Ares restless in his iron crownI
'Sleep Ares Sleep For once the dice are thrownJ
Empires to thee are leaves upon the airD
Ere all the homes go smoking to the skiesB
And men are swept upon the battle blastK
Ere all the tears are wept from women's eyesB
O Queen of Love hold now the Lover fastK
And let him taste eternal anodyne at last '-
-
But with the dawn there comes a soldier's songL
'When all the guns have fired their last saluteM
And the tongues of all the world are muteM
And life is dearer than to right a wrongL
Then may he weary of his burnng wineN
And rest forever in the arms divineN
Of Aphrodite passionate and paleO
But Hark He comes Hail Ares Lord of Thunder HailO
-
'He rides above the ocean and the snowC
His trail is on the curtain of the skiesB
Brighter than dawn his young eternal eyesB
Shine in the eyes of Valour far belowC
Now Mammon hides beneath his trembling hallsB
While Honour marches singing into warD
On strange forgotten hearts a radiance fallsB
As ever nearer burning from afarD
The sword of Ares gleams above the morning star '-
-
'The other gods are weaker thou aloneJ
Dost break the king and bend the emperor's kneeP
Lower than unto Christ they bow to theeP
Lord of the slave and guardian of the freeP
Steel hearted Ares shaker of the throneJ
Young god of battle restless lover hailO
For once a man has seen thine eyes aflameQ
And mounted on the horses of the galeO
Death is a nothing life an empty nameQ
Arise and lead us ere our blood be tameQ
O lord of thunder Arcs of the crimson mail '-
