For A Drawing By E A AbbeyA
-
-
How weary 'twas to wait The yearB
Went dragging slowly onC
The red leaf to the running brookD
Dropped sadly and was goneE
December came and locked in iceF
The plashing of the millG
The white snow filled the orchard upH
But she was waiting stillG
-
Spring stirred and broke The rooks once moreI
'Gan cawing in the loftJ
The young lambs' new awakened criesK
Came trembling from the croftJ
The clumps of primrose filled againL
The hollows by the wayM
The pale wind flowers blew but sheA
Grew paler still than theyM
-
How weary 'twas to wait With JuneN
Through all the drowsy streetO
Came distant murmurs of the warI
And rumours of the fleetO
The gossips from the market stallsP
Cried news of Joe and TimQ
But June shed all her leaves and stillG
There came no news of himQ
-
And then at last at last at lastR
One bless d August mornS
Beneath the yellowing autumn elmsT
Pang panging came the hornS
The swift coach paused a creaking spaceU
Then flashed away and passedR
But she stood trembling yet and dazedV
The news had come at lastR
-
And thus the artist saw her standW
While all around her seemsX
As vague and shadowy as the shapesY
That flit from us in dreamsX
And naught in all the world is trueZ
Save those few words which tellA2
That he she lost is found againL
Is found again and wellA2
