The Water Of Gold Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CBCB DEDE FGFH IJIJ KLKL LMLM NONO

Buy who'll buy In the market placeA
Out of the market din and clatterB
The quack with his puckered persuasive faceA
Patters away in the ancient patterB
-
Buy who'll buy In this flask I holdC
In this little flask that I tap with my stick SirB
Is the famed infallible Water of GoldC
The One Original True ElixirB
-
Buy who'll buy There's a maiden thereD
She with the ell long flaxen tressesE
Here is a draught that will make you fairD
Fit for an emperor's own caressesE
-
Buy who'll buy Are you old and grayF
Drink but of this and in less than a minuteG
Lo you will dance like the flowers in MayF
Chirp and chirk like a new fledged linnetH
-
Buy who'll buy Is a baby illI
Drop but a drop of this in his throttleJ
Straight he will gossip and gorge his fillI
Brisk as a burgher over a bottleJ
-
Here is wealth for your life if you will but askK
Here is health for your limb without lint or lotionL
Here is all that you lack in this tiny flaskK
And the price is a couple of silver groschenL
-
Buy who'll buy So the tale runs onL
And still in the great world's market placesM
The Quack with his quack catholiconL
Finds ever his crowd of upturned facesM
-
For he plays on our hearts with his pipe and drumN
On our vague regret on our weary yearningO
For he sells the thing that never can comeN
Or the thing that has vanished past returningO
