Much strange is true And yet so muchA
Dan Time thereto of doubtful laysB
He blurs them both beneath his touchA

In this our tale his part he playsB
At Florence so the legend tellsC
There stood a church that men would praiseB
-
Even where Art the most excelsC
For works of price but chief for oneD
They called the Virgin with the BellsC
-
Gracious she was and featly doneD
With crown of gold about the hairE
And robe of blue with stars thereonF
-
And sceptre in her hand did bearE
And o'er her in an almond treeG
Three little golden bells there wereH
-
Writ with Faith Hope and CharityG
None knew from whence she came of oldI
Nor whose the sculptor's name should beG
-
Of great or small But this they toldI
That once from out the blaze of squareE
And bickering folk that bought and soldI
-
More moved no doubt of heat than prayerE
Came to the church an UmbrianF
Lord of much gold and champaign fairE
-
But for all this a hard haught manF
To whom the priests in humblenessC
At once to beg for alms beganF
-
Praying him grant of his excessC
Such as for poor men's bread might payJ
Or give their saint a gala dressC
-
Thereat with scorn he answered NayJ
Most Reverend Far too well ye knowF
By guile and wile the fox's wayJ
-
To swell the Church's overflowF
But ere from me the least carlineF
Ye win this summer's sky shall snowF
-
Or likelier still your doll's eyed queenF
Shall ring her bells but not of craftK
By Bacchus ye are none too leanF
-
For fasting folk With that he laughedK
And so across the porphyry floorL
His hand upon his dagger haftK

Strode and of these was seen no moreL
Nor of a truth much marvelled theyJ
At those his words since gear and storeL

Oft dower shrunk souls But on a dayJ
While yet again throughout the squareE
The buyers in their noisy wayJ
-
Chaffered around the basket wareE
It chanced I but the tale revealM
Nor true nor false therein declareE
-
It chanced that when the priest would kneelM
Before the taper's flickering flameN
Sudden a little tremulous pealM
-
From out the Virgin's altar cameN
And they that heard must fain recallO
The Umbrian and the words of shameN
-
Spoke in his pride and therewithalO
Came news how at that very dateP
And hour of time was fixed his fallO
-
Who of the Duke was banned the StateP
And all his goods and lands as wellO
To Holy Church were confiscateP
-
Such is the tale the Frati tellO
