Much strange is true And yet so muchA
Dan Time thereto of doubtful laysB
He blurs them both beneath his touchA
-
In this our tale his part he playsB
At Florence so the legend tellsC
There stood a church that men would praiseB
-
Even where Art the most excelsC
For works of price but chief for oneD
They called the Virgin with the BellsC
-
Gracious she was and featly doneD
With crown of gold about the hairE
And robe of blue with stars thereonF
-
And sceptre in her hand did bearE
And o'er her in an almond treeG
Three little golden bells there wereH
-
Writ with Faith Hope and CharityG
None knew from whence she came of oldI
Nor whose the sculptor's name should beG
-
Of great or small But this they toldI
That once from out the blaze of squareE
And bickering folk that bought and soldI
-
More moved no doubt of heat than prayerE
Came to the church an UmbrianF
Lord of much gold and champaign fairE
-
But for all this a hard haught manF
To whom the priests in humblenessC
At once to beg for alms beganF
-
Praying him grant of his excessC
Such as for poor men's bread might payJ
Or give their saint a gala dressC
-
Thereat with scorn he answered NayJ
Most Reverend Far too well ye knowF
By guile and wile the fox's wayJ
-
To swell the Church's overflowF
But ere from me the least carlineF
Ye win this summer's sky shall snowF
-
Or likelier still your doll's eyed queenF
Shall ring her bells but not of craftK
By Bacchus ye are none too leanF
-
For fasting folk With that he laughedK
And so across the porphyry floorL
His hand upon his dagger haftK
-
Strode and of these was seen no moreL
Nor of a truth much marvelled theyJ
At those his words since gear and storeL
-
Oft dower shrunk souls But on a dayJ
While yet again throughout the squareE
The buyers in their noisy wayJ
-
Chaffered around the basket wareE
It chanced I but the tale revealM
Nor true nor false therein declareE
-
It chanced that when the priest would kneelM
Before the taper's flickering flameN
Sudden a little tremulous pealM
-
From out the Virgin's altar cameN
And they that heard must fain recallO
The Umbrian and the words of shameN
-
Spoke in his pride and therewithalO
Came news how at that very dateP
And hour of time was fixed his fallO
-
Who of the Duke was banned the StateP
And all his goods and lands as wellO
To Holy Church were confiscateP
-
Such is the tale the Frati tellO
