Firstly thou churl son of JanusB
Rough for cold in drugget cladC
Com'st with rack and rheum to pain usB
Firstly thou churl son of JanusB
Caverned now is old SylvanusD
Numb and chill are maid and ladC
-
After thee thy dripping brotherE
Dank his weeds around him clingF
Fogs his footsteps swathe and smotherE
After thee thy dripping brotherE
Hearth set couples hush each otherE
Listening for the cry of SpringF
-
Hark for March thereto doth followA
Blithe a herald tabardedC
O'er him flies the shifting swallowA
Hark for March thereto doth followA
Swift his horn by holt and hollowA
Wakes the flowers in winter deadC
-
Thou then April Iris' daughterE
Born between the storm and sunG
Coy as nymph ere Pan hath caught herE
Thou then April Iris' daughterE
Now are light and rustling waterE
Now are mirth and nests begunG
-
May the jocund cometh afterE
Month of all the Loves and mineH
Month of mock and cuckoo laughterE
May the jocund cometh afterE
Beaks are gay on roof and rafterE
Luckless lovers peak and pineH
-
June the next with roses scentedC
Languid from a slumber spellI
June in shade of leafage tentedC
June the next with roses scentedC
Now her Itys still lamentedC
Sings the mournful PhilomelI
-
Hot July thereafter ragesJ
Dog star smitten wild with heatC
Fierce as pard the hunter cagesJ
Hot July thereafter ragesJ
Traffic now no more engagesJ
Tongues are still in stall and streetC
-
August next with cider mellowI
Laughs from out the poppied cornK
Hook at back a lusty fellowI
August next with cider mellowI
Now in wains the sheafage yellowI
'Twixt the hedges slow is borneK
-
Laden deep with fruity clusterE
Then September ripe and haleI
Bees about his basket flusterE
Laden deep with fruity clusterE
Skies have now a softer lustreE
Barns resound to flap of flailI
-
Thou then too of woodlands loverE
Dusk October berry stainedC
Wailed about of parting ploverE
Thou then too of woodlands loverE
Fading now are copse and coverE
Forests now are sere and wanedC
-
Next November limping batteredC
Blinded in a whirl of leafL
Worn of want and travel tatteredC
Next November limping batteredC
Now the goodly ships are shatteredC
Far at sea on rock and reefL
-
Last of all the shrunk DecemberE
Cowled for age in ashen grayM
Fading like a fading emberE
Last of all the shrunk DecemberE
Him regarding men rememberE
Life and joy must pass awayM
