Green growths of mosses drop and beadA
Around the granite brinkB
And 'twixt the isles of water weedA
The wood birds dip and drinkB
-
Slow efts about the edges sleepC
Swift darting water fliesD
Shoot on the surface down the deepC
Fast following bubbles riseD
-
Look down What groves that scarcely swayE
What wood obscure profoundF
What jungle where some beast of preyE
Might choose his vantage groundF
-
-
-
Who knows what lurks beneath the tideG
Who knows what tale BelikeB
Those antres vast and shadows hideG
Some patriarchal PikeB
-
Some tough old tyrant wrinkle jawedH
To whom the sky the earthI
Have but for aim to look on awedH
And see him wax in girthI
-
Hard ruler there by right of mightJ
An ageless AutocratK
Whose good old rule is AppetiteJ
And subjects fresh and fatK
-
While they poor souls in wan despairL
Still watch for signs in himM
And dying hand from heir to heirL
The day undawned and dimM
-
When the pond's terror too must goB
Or creeping in by stealthN
Some bolder brood with common blowB
Shall found a CommonwealthN
-
-
-
Or say perchance the liker thisO
That these themselves are goneP
That Amurath in minimisO
Still hungry lingers onQ
-
With dwindling trunk and wolfish jawR
Revolving sullen thingsO
But most the blind unequal lawR
That rules the food of KingsO
-
The blot that makes the cosmic AllS
A mere time honoured cheatT
That bids the Great to eat the SmallS
Yet lack the Small to eatT
-
-
-
Who knows Meanwhile the mosses beadA
Around the granite brinkB
And 'twixt the isles of water weedA
The wood birds dip and drinkB
