A Welcome From The "johnson Club" Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BBCD EEFF GGHHDDII JJKKKKLLKK MM

To William John Courthope MarchA
-
-
When Pope came back from Trojan wars once moreB
He found a Bard to meet him on the shoreB
And hail his advent with a strain as clearC
As e'er was sung by BYRON or by FRERED
-
You SIR have travelled from no distant climeE
Yet would JOHN GAY could welcome you in rhymeE
And by some fable not too coldly pennedF
Teach how with judgment one may praise a FriendF
-
There is no need that I should tell in wordsG
Your prowess from The Paradise of BirdsG
No need to show how surely you have tracedH
The Life in Poetry the Law in TasteH
Or mark with what unwearied strength you wearD
The weight that WARTON found too great to bearD
There Is no need for this or that My planI
Is less to laud the Matter than the ManI
-
This is my brief We recognise in youJ
The mind judicial the untroubled viewJ
The critic who without pedantic poseK
Takes his firm foothold on the thing he knowsK
Who free alike from passion or pretenceK
Holds the good rule of calm and common senseK
And be the subject or perplexed or plainL
Clear or confusing is throughout urbaneL
Patient persuasive logical preciseK
And only hard to vanity and viceK
-
More I could add but brevity is bestM
These are our claims to honour you as GuestM
