His Friends To Quintus Horatius FlaccusA
-
H c decies repetita non placebit Ars PoeticaB
-
-
Flaccus you write us charming songsA
No bard we know possessesA
In such perfection what belongsA
To brief and bright addressesA
-
No man can say that Life is shortC
With mien so little fretfulD
No man to Virtue's paths exhortC
In phrases less regretfulD
-
Or touch with more serene distressA
On Fortune's ways erraticB
And then delightfully digressA
From Alp to AdriaticB
-
All this is well no doubt and tendsA
Barbarian minds to softenE
But HORACE we we are your friendsA
Why tell us this so oftenE
-
Why feign to spread a cheerful feastF
And then thrust in our facesA
These barren scraps to say the leastF
Of Stoic common placesA
-
Recount and welcome your pursuitsA
Sing Lyd 's lyre and hairG
Sing drums and Berecynthian flutesA
Sing parsley wreaths but spareG
-
O spare to sing what none denyH
That things we love decayB
That Time and Gold have wings to flyH
That all must Fate obeyB
-
Or bid us dine on this day weekB
And pour us if you canI
As soft and sleek as girlish cheekB
Your inmost C cubanE
-
Of that we fear not overplusA
But your didactic 'tap'J
Forgive us grows monotonousA
Nunc vale Verbum sapJ
