To A LA
-
-
The shopman shambled from the doorway outB
And twitched it downC
Snapped in the blade 'Twas scarcely dear I doubtB
At half a crownC
-
Useless enough And yet can still be seenD
In letters clearE
Traced on the metal's rusty damaskeenD
Povr ParuenyrE
-
Whose was it once Who manned it once in hopeF
His fate to gainD
Who was it dreamed his oyster world should opeF
To this in vainD
-
Maybe with some stout Argonaut it sailedG
The Western SeasH
Maybe but to some paltry Nym availedG
For toasting cheeseH
-
Or decked by Beauty on some morning lawnD
With silken knotI
Perchance ere night for Church and King 'twas drawnD
Perchance 'twas notI
-
Who knows or cares To day 'mid foils and glovesJ
Its hilt dependsK
Flanked by the favours of forgotten lovesJ
Remembered friendsK
-
And oft its legend lends in hours of stressL
A word to aidM
Or like a warning comes in puffed successL
Its broken bladeM
