When you and I go downA
Breathless and coldB
Our faces both worn backC
To earthly mouldB
How lonely we shall beD
What shall we doE
You without meD
I without youE
-
I cannot bear the thoughtF
You first may dieG
Nor of how you will weepH
Should IG
We are too much aloneI
What can we doE
To make our bodies oneJ
You me I youE
-
We are most nearly bornK
Of one same kindL
We have the same delightM
The same true mindL
Must we then part we partN
Is there no wayO
To keep a beating heartN
And light of dayO
-
I could now rise and runJ
Through street on streetP
To where you are breathing youE
That we might meetP
And that your living voiceQ
Might sound aboveR
Fear and we two rejoiceQ
Within our loveR
-
How frail the body isS
And we are madeT
As only in decayO
To lean and fadeT
I think too much of deathU
There is a gloomV
When I can t hear your breathU
Calm in some roomV
-
O but how suddenlyD
Either may droopW
Countenance be so whiteM
Body stoopW
Then there may be a placeX
Where fading flowersY
dropp on a lifeless faceX
Through weeping hoursY
-
Is then nothing safeZ
Can we not findL
Some everlasting lifeA2
In our one mindL
I feel it like disgraceX
Only to understandB2
Your spirit through your wordC2
Or by your handB2
-
I cannot find a wayO
Through love and throughE
I cannot reach beyondD2
Body to youE
When you or I must goE2
Down evermoreF2
There ll be no more to sayO
But a locked doorF2
