They bend their knees toward foreign skiesA
Chanting creeds they do not ownB
Wearing robes of borrowed godsC
While their spirits sit aloneB
-
In cathedrals built of sand and shameD
They scream in tongues not born hereE
Trying to out Christian the HebrewF
Out Muslim the desert seerE
-
But what of the drumbeat deep in our soilG
What of the rivers that fed our flameD
What of the wisdom of Bori's rainH
And the Ogoni tongue that knew no shameD
-
We trade our totems for crossesI
Our shrines for polished pewsJ
Drenched in holy waterK
Yet lost in borrowed huesJ
-
We kill the self to wear a maskL
Fight brothers for foreign causeM
Lift banners of prophets not born of usN
While our land groans under unjust lawsO
-
Where is the science of our soilG
The technology of our treesP
The language that stirs inventionQ
The math beneath the breezeP
-
The world waits for the African brandR
Not imitation painted blackS
But something forged from iron earthT
A spirit no empire can crackS
-
We are not echoes of old empiresU
We are the seed and not the weedV
Not imitators of broken systemsW
But answers to the world s deep needV
-
Even if we speak their languageX
Let our thoughts come from our clayY
Even if we learn their methodsZ
Let our roots define our wayY
-
Let us be Nigerian deeply soA2
With minds of silicon and steelB2
With hearts that drum from Ogoni soilG
And dreams our children feelB2
-
Let us leave fanatic firesU
Ethnic pride that blinds our eyesA
Let us rise beyond religionQ
That makes us small to reach the skiesA
-
We are not here to be copiesP
We are originals in bloomC2
Africa let the world see your geniusN
Let your own seed make roomC2
