How watchful neede we to becomeA
And how devoutly prayB
That thee O Lord we fall not fromA
Upon our tryall dayB
For if thy great apostle saidC
He would not thee denieD
Whom he that very night denaydC
On what shall we relieE
-
For of ourselues we cannot leaueE
One pleasure for thy sakeF
No nor one vertuous thought conceiueG
Till vs thou able makeF
Nay we not onely thee denieD
When persecutions beH
But or forget or from thee flieE
When peace attends on theeH
-
O let those prayers vs auailE
Thou didst for Peter daigneD
That when our foe shall us assaileE
His labour may be vaineD
Yea cast on vs those powerful eyesG
That mou'd him to lamentC
We may bemoane with bitter criesG
Our follies and repentC
-
And grant that such as him succeedC
For pastors of thy foldC
Thy sheepe and lambes may guide and feedeC
As thou appoint'st they shouldC
By his example speaking whatC
They out in truth to sayG
And in their lives confirming thatC
They teach them to obeyG
