Sweet baby sleep what ails my dearA
What ails my darling thus to cryB
Be still my child and lend thine earC
To hear me sing thy lullabyB
My pretty lamb forbear to weepD
Be still my dear sweet baby sleepD
-
Thou blessed soul what canst thou fearA
What thing to thee can mischief doE
Thy God is now thy father dearA
His holy Spouse thy mother tooE
Sweet baby then forbear to weepD
Be still my babe sweet baby sleepD
-
Though thy conception was in sinF
A sacred bathing thou hast hadG
And though thy birth unclean hath beenF
A blameless babe thou now art madeH
Sweet baby then forbear to weepD
Be still my dear sweet baby sleepD
-
While thus thy lullaby I singI
For thee great blessings ripening beJ
Thine eldest brother is a KingI
And hath a kingdom bought for theeJ
Sweet baby then forbear to weepD
Be still my babe sweet baby sleepD
-
Sweet baby sleep and nothing fearA
For whosoever thee offendsK
By thy protector threat'ned areL
And God and angels are thy friendsK
Sweet baby then forbear to weepD
Be still my babe sweet baby sleepD
-
When God with us was dwelling hereC
In little babes he took delightM
Such innocents as thou my dearA
Are ever precious in His sightM
Sweet baby then forbear to weepD
Be still my babe sweet baby sleepD
-
A little infant once was HeJ
And strength in weakness then was laidH
Upon His virgin mother's kneeJ
That power to thee might be conveyedH
Sweet baby then forbear to weepD
Be still my babe sweet baby sleepD
-
In this thy frailty and thy needN
He friends and helpers doth prepareO
Which thee shall cherish clothe and feedN
For of thy weal they tender areL
Sweet baby then forbear to weepD
Be still my babe sweet baby sleepD
-
The King of kings when he was bornP
Had not so much for outward easeQ
By Him such dressings were not wornP
Nor such like swaddling clothes as theseQ
Sweet baby then forbear to weepD
Be still my babe sweet baby sleepD
-
Within a manger lodged thy LordR
Where oxen lay and asses fedS
Warm rooms we do to thee affordR
An easy cradle or a bedS
Sweet baby then forbear to weepD
Be still my babe sweet baby sleepD
-
The wants that He did then sustainT
Have purchased wealth my babe for theeJ
And by His torments and His painT
Thy rest and ease secur d beJ
My baby then forbear to weepD
Be still my babe sweet baby sleepD
-
Thou hast yet more to perfect thisU
A promise and an earnest gotV
Of gaining everlasting blissU
Though thou my babe perceiv'st it notV
Sweet baby then forbear to weepD
Be still my babe sweet baby sleepD
