Glenara Glenara now read me my dreamA
CampbellB
-
Father I have dreamed a dreamA
When the rosy morning hourC
Poured its light on field and streamA
Kindling nature with its pow'rD
-
O'er the meadow's dewy breastE
I had chased a butterflyF
Tempted by its gaudy vestE
Still my vain pursuit to plyF
-
Till my limbs were weary grownG
With the distance I had strayedH
Then to rest I laid me downI
Where a beech tree cast its shadeH
-
Soon a heaviness came o'er meJ
And a deep sleep sealed my eyesK
And a vision past before meJ
Full of changing phantasiesK
-
First I stood beside a bowerC
Green as summer bow'r could beJ
Vine and fruit and leaf and flowerC
Mixed to weave its canopyJ
-
And within reclined a formL
As embodied moonlight fairM
With a soft cheek fresh and warmL
Deep blue eye and sunny hairM
-
By her side a goblet stoodN
Such as bacchanalians brimO
High the rich grape's crimson bloodP
Sparkled o'er its gilded rimO
-
As I gazed she bowed her headQ
With a gay and graceful moveR
And in words of music saidQ
Drink and learn the lore of loveS
-
Next I stood beside a mountainT
Of majestic form and heightU
Cliff and crag and glen and fountainT
Mingled to make up its mightU
-
On its lofty brow were growingV
Flowers never chilled by gloomW
For the sky above them glowingV
Dyed them with a deathless bloomW
-
And I saw the crystal domeX
Wondrous in its majestyJ
Where earth's great ones find a homeX
When their spirits are set freeJ
-
By its portals I espiedJ
One who kept the courts withinY
High he waved a wreath and criedJ
Come up hither strive and winY
-
Then my vision changed againZ
In a fairy coloured shellA2
O'er the wide sea's pathless plainB2
I was speeding fast and wellA2
-
Suddenly beneath its prowC2
Parted were the azure wavesK
And I saw where far belowD2
Yawn the vast deep's secret cavesK
-
Where the Syren sings her songE2
To old Ocean's sons and daughtersK
And the mermaids dance alongE2
To the music of the watersK
-
Where the coral forest o'erC
Storm or tempest ne'er is drivenT
And the gems that strew its floorF2
Sparkle like the stars in heavenT
-
Treasures such as never eyeF
Of the earth has looked uponG2
Gold and pearls of many a dyeF
There in rich profusion shoneG
-
And a voice came to my earH2
Saying in a stern cold toneG
Such as chills the heart with fearI2
Seize and make the prize thine ownG
-
Then across a clouded wildJ
Lone and drear and desolateJ
Where no cheerful cottage smiledJ
I pursued the steps of fateJ
-
Ever bearing in my breastJ
Thoughts almost to madness wroughtJ
Ever ever seeking restJ
Never finding what I SoughtJ
-
Till I gave my wanderings o'erC
By a black and icy streamA
Deep I plunged and knew no moreF2
Father read me now my dreamA
-
The old man bowed his headJ
And pressed his thin hand to his withered browC2
As if he struggled with some rising thoughtJ
Which should have kept its place in memory's urnJ2
Till he had cast the shadow from his soulK2
Which for a while had bound it in a spellA2
Born of the bygone years then thus he spokeL2
-
Now listen boy and I will show to theeJ
The import of thy vision I will tellA2
Thee what its scenes and shapes of mysteryJ
Foreshadow of the future for full wellA2
I know the wizard lore whose witcheryJ
Binds e'en the time to come in its wild spellA2
And from approaching years a knowledge wringsK
Of what they bear upon their viewless wingsK
-
Along life's weary way of pain and careJ
From earliest infancy to eldest ageM2
Forms viewless as the soft breathed summer airJ
Attend man's footsteps in his pilgrimageN2
And if his destiny be dark or fairJ
If Pleasure gilds or Sorrow blots the pageM2
Whereon is traced his history still his earJ
Will ever catch their warning voices nearJ
-
And they those guardian ones who while thy sleepO2
Hung o'er thee like a curtain came aroundJ
And fanned thee till thy slumber grew more deepO2
Flung o'er thy rest so perfect and profoundJ
A dream whose mem'ry thou shouldst ever keepO2
Bound to thy spirit for altho' it woundJ
Thy young heart now perchance in after yearsK
'Twill save thee much of toil and many tearsK
-
It was a dream of life of boyhood's strongE2
And soul consuming yearnings after loveS
His eager search to find amid the throngE2
Some heart to give him thought for thought to moveR
And mingle with his own as twines the songE2
From Beauty's lyre and lips to know and proveR
The dearest joy to care cursed mortals givenT
The one with least of earth and most of heavenT
-
Of manhood's ceaseless strivings after fameP2
The veriest phantom of all phantasiesK
For which he wields the sword or lights the flameP2
Whose red glare mocks a nation's agoniesK
Or by his star outwatching taper pliesK
His pen or pencil to gain what a nameP2
A passing sound an echo a mere breathQ2
Which he vain fool dreams mightier than deathQ2
-
And of a later period when the soulK2
Forsakes its high resolves and wild desiresK
When stern Ambition can no more controlK2
And Love has shrouded o'er its smothered firesK
When Expectation ceases to consoleK2
And Hope the last kind comforter expiresK
And Avarice monster of the gilded vestJ
Creeps in and occupies the vacant breastJ
-
And then the last sad scene The sick heart soreJ
And fainting from its wounds the palsied limbO
The brow whose death sweat peeps from every poreJ
The eye with its long weary watch grown dimO
The withered wan cheek that shall bloom no moreJ
The last dregs dripping slowly from the brimO
Of life's drained cup behind all gloom beforeJ
A deep dark gulf we plunge and all is o'erJ
