It is in sooth a lovely tressA
Still curled in many a ringB
As glossy as the plumes that dressA
The raven's jetty wingB
And the broad and soul illumined browC
Above whose arch it grewD
Was like the stainless mountain snowE
In its purity of hueD
-
I mind the time 'twas given to meF
The night the hour the spotG
And the eye that pleaded silentlyF
Forget the giver notG
Oh myriads of stars on highH
Were smiling sweetly fairI
But none was lovely as the eyeH
That shone beside me thereI
-
Above our heads an ancient oakJ
Its strong wide arms held outK
And from its roots a fountain brokeJ
With a tiny laughing shoutK
And the fairy people of the wildL
Were bending to their restM
As trustingly as sleeps the childL
Upon its mother's breastM
-
Soft silvery cloudlets pure and whiteN
Along the sky were hungO
As if the spirits of the nightN
Their mantles there had flungO
And then the night breeze pensivelyF
Sighed from its unseen throneP
And far o'er field and flower and treeF
A hallowed light came downQ
-
But in our breasts was springing upR
A something lovelier farS
Than field or tree or flow'ret's cupR
Or sun or moon or starS
We heeded not the fountain nearT
Its song of gladness singingB
For in our hearts a fount more dearT
And pure and sweet was springingB
-
And she was one whom fortune's smileF
Had gladdened from her birthU
Yet her high spirit knew no guileF
No blot nor stain of earthU
And I was but a friendless boyV
And yet her heart was mineW
I knew it and the thought was joyV
A joy all all divineW
-
From out a braided mass she tookX
This single lock of jetY
And gave it with that pleading lookX
Which said Do not forgetY
Forget as soon the waves that rollF
The ocean's caves aboveZ
May tell their secrets as the soulF
Forget its earliest loveZ
-
It has been with me now for yearsA2
Long years of care and strifeB2
And shall be with me till time wearsC2
Away my web of lifeB2
And when death's keen resistless dartD2
Shall bid its sorrows ceaseE2
This tress shall rest upon my heartD2
Its talisman of peaceE2

-
'Twas little she thought that I stood breathless by her side listening to the song she sang as she sat by the sea's edge pondering so deeply upon me too perhaps that the white foam glimmered on her brow unheededF2
-
Onagh The Pale Child of the Brehon KingB
-
She stood beside the wide wild seaF
The winds howled hoarse and highH
And dark clouds drifting drearilyF
Swept o'er the starless skyH
-
Her breast was white as mountain snowE
Her locks hung loose and freeF
The foam that glimmered on her browC
Was scarce so pale as sheF
-
She sang a mournful song of loveZ
Of trusting love betrayedG2
Ah why did he who won her proveH2
So faithless to the maidG2
-
Why pines my heart so wearilyF
Why heaves my aching breastM
And why is sleep so far from meF
When others are at restM
-
Thou truant wanderer o'er the deepI2
The cause of all my caresC2
For thee at night I wake and weepI2
When none may mark my tearsC2
-
I seek the festive hall no moreJ2
Its mirth no more I craveK2
My heart is lonely as the shoreJ2
And restless as the waveK2
-
My soul has struggled to forgetY
Its sleepless fatal flameL2
I know thy vows were false and yetY
My love is still the sameL2
-
Still o'er the dream I nursed too wellF
My bursting heart will yearnM2
For ever with me must it dwellF
Oh wanderer returnM2
-
A white sail fluttered in the windN2
A light bark skimmed the seaF
It came like hope across the mindN2
As swift and silentlyF
-
The shell strewn beach that edged the mainO2
A manly footstep pressedM
The wanderer had returned againP2
The maiden's heart was blessedM
