Come sit thee by my side once moreA
'Tis long since thus we' metB
And though our dream of love is o'erC
Its sweetness lingers yetB
Its transient day has long been pastD
Its flame has ceased to burnE
But Memory holds its spirit fastD
Safe in her sacred urnE
-
I will not chide thy wanderingsF
Nor ask why thou couldst fleeG
A heart whose deep affection's springsF
Poured forth such love for theeG
We may not curb the restless mindH
Nor teach the wayward heartI
To love against its will nor bindH
It with the chains of artI
-
I would but tell thee how in tearsJ
And bitterness my soulK
Has yearned with dreams through long long yearsL
Which it could not controlK
And how the thought that clingeth toM
And twineth round the pastD
For ever in my heart shall glowN
And be save one my lastD
-
They say thou hast another's loveO
Well cherish it but thouP
Its lack of strength and depth wilt proveQ
Should sorrow cloud thy browP
Though she may own a statelier formR
A fairer cheek than mineS
Her heart cannot so well and warmR
Respond each throb of thineS
-
Her words were gentle but their toneT
Was sad as sorrow's sighU
A tear drop trembled in his ownT
As he sought her downcast eyeU
A chord was struck within his breastV
That long untouched had lainW
Old memories started from their restV
The maid was loved againX
-
StanzasY
-
On there are hours of sadness when the soulK
Torn from its every stay and crushed beneathZ
Its many griefs and spurning faith's controlK
Pants with an earnest longing for the deathA2
Which would for ever close its dark careerB2
With the pale shroud and the remorseless bierC2
When the harsh sterile nothingness of lifeD2
First breaks upon the hope deluded breastV
And the heart sickens with the bootless strifeD2
That wrings its chords and longs to be at restV
Ev'n if the blow that frees it from distressE2
Should strike it into utter nothingnessF2
-
Ah nothingness The thought at times will comeG2
The mind will wrestle with the mysteryG
That clouds its being from its clay made homeH2
Its dwelling of a moment it will fleeG
Into the far depths of the vast UNKNOWNT
In its vain searchings for th' eternal throneT
Of that Omnipotence which gave it birthI2
And giving it a nature which might suitJ2
A seraph bound its destiny to earthI2
And a few years in which to eat the fruitJ2
Of life's strange tree so bitter at its coreA
Then death the quiet grave sleep and what moreA
-
Whence came we whither go we All is stillK2
And voiceless in the past A veil is drawnL2
Across the future by life's mystic rillK2
We sit and ponder watching for the dawnL2
Of some yet unconceived far reaching thoughtM2
By which our nature's secret shall be taughtM2
Why sorrow is our element why sinN2
Is native in us by what curse we bearO2
An ever aching crushing void withinN2
Our secret souls and why the little shareO2
Of happiness that mingles with our fateP2
Is of such fleeting transitory dateP2
-
Our loves our hopes what are they fruits which turnE
To ashes on our lips illusive lightsQ2
That cast a moment's brightness while they burnE
Then die and leave a darkness which affrightsQ2
Our spirits with its thrice redoubled gloomR2
Making the sky a pall the earth a tombR2
And yet these are the all of life for whichS2
'Tis worth the wearing of its chain to knowN
Wealth fame and power are but toys the richS2
The high and mighty with the base and lowN
Alike before the reaper Death must fallT2
So be it in the grave is rest for allT2
-
StanzasQ2
-
When the leaf is on the treeG
And the bird is in the bowerC
And the butterfly and beeG
Bear its treasures from the flowerC
When the fields put on the sheenU2
That to young eyed Spring belongsQ2
When the groves and forests greenU2
Echo with a thousand songsQ2
-
When wild Beauty wanders forthV2
Giving with no stinted careO2
All her loveliness to earthI2
All her sweetness to the airO2
Then the heart with gladness stirredW2
Mindful of its griefs no moreA
Mounts and carols like a birdW2
When the pearly shower is o'erC
-
But the summer's sunny hoursQ2
As we count them pass awayX2
And its fairest fruits and flowersQ2
Are but food for stern decayX2
Then with wailings deep and loudY2
Like the sea's in its unrestV
Winter spreads his icy shroudY2
O'er the bare earth's frozen breastV
-
Thus the spirit's early gladnessQ2
Sorrow chills or time removesQ2
And the soul in tears and sadnessQ2
Mourns its perished joys and lovesQ2
Hope will lose its trusting boldnessQ2
One by one its beams departI
And Despair with icy coldnessQ2
Winds its mantle round the heartI
