But when I think how drearA
Is each hope that used to cheer meB
I cease to wish thee hereA

The storms that burst on meB
But the bitter chalice I drink fromC
I will not pass to theeB

I would share the world with thee were itD
With all its pleasures mineE
But the sorrows which I inheritF
I never will make thineE
