The Soldier's Welcome Home Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCDCEFGF HIHIJKJK

Written upon the return of General Scott from his brilliant Mexican campaignA
-
Victorious the hero returns from the warsB
His brow bound with laurels that never will fadeC
While streams the free standard of stripes and of starsD
Whose field in the battle the foeman dismayedC
When the Mexican hosts in their fury came onE
Like a tower of strength in his might he aroseF
Where danger most threatened his banner was borneG
Waving hope to his friends and despair to his foesF
-
The soldier of honor and liberty hailH
His deeds in the temple of Fame are enrolledI
His precepts like flower seeds sown by the galeH
Take root in the hearts of the valiant and boldI
The warrior's escutcheon his foes seek to blotJ
But vain is the effort of partisan bandsK
For freemen will render full justice to SCOTTJ
And welcome him home with their hearts in their handsK
