He leads we hear our Seaman's callA
In the roll of battles wonB
For he is Britain's AdmiralC
Till setting of her sunB
-
When Britain's life was in her shipsD
He kept the sea as his own rightE
And saved us from more fell eclipseD
Than drops on day from blackest nightE
Again his battle spat the flameF
Again his victory flag men sawG
At sound of Nelson's chieftain nameF
A deeper breath did Freedom drawG
-
Each trusty captain knew his partH
They served as men not marshalled kineB
The pulses they of his great heartH
With heads to work his main designB
Their Nelson's word to beat the foeI
And spare the fall'n before them shoneB
Good was the hour of blow for blowI
And clear their course while they fought onB
-
Behold the Envied vanward sweepJ
A day in mourning weeds adoredK
Then Victory was wrought to weepJ
Then sorrow crowned with laurel soaredK
-
A breezeless flag above a shroudL
All Britain was when wind and waveM
To make her passing human proudL
Brought his last gift from o'er the graveM
-
Uprose the soul of him a starN
On that brave day of Ocean daysO
It rolled the smoke from TrafalgerN
To darken Austerlitz ablazeO
Are we the men of old its lightE
Will point us under every skyP
The path he took and must we fightE
Our Nelson be our battle cryP
-
He leads we hear our Seaman's callA
In the roll of battles wonB
For he is Britain's AdmiralC
Till setting of her sunB
