The Years Had Worn Their Season's Belt Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHIH JKJK HLHL MNON PQPQ QQQQ RSTS

The years had worn their seasons' beltA
From bud to rosy primeB
Since Nellie by the larch pole kneltA
And helped the hop to climbB
-
Most diligent of teachers thenC
But now with all to learnD
She breathed beyond a thought of menC
Though formed to make men burnD
-
She dwelt where 'twixt low beaten thornsE
Two mill blades like a snailF
Enormous with inquiring hornsE
Looked down on half the valeF
-
You know the grey of dew on grassG
Ere with the young sun firedH
And you know well the thirst one hasI
For the coming and desiredH
-
Quick in our ring she leapt and gaveJ
Her hand to left to rightK
No claim on her had any saveJ
To feed the joy of sightK
-
For man and maid a laughing wordH
She tossed in notes as clearL
As when the February birdH
Sings out that Spring is nearL
-
Of what befell behind that sconeM
Let none who knows revealN
In ballad days she might have beenO
A heroine rousing steelN
-
On us did she bestow the hourP
And fixed it firm in thoughtQ
Her spirit like a meadow flowerP
That gives and asks for noughtQ
-
She seemed to make the sunlight stayQ
And show her in its prideQ
O she was fair as a beech in MayQ
With the sun on the yonder sideQ
-
There was more life than breath can giveR
In the looks in her fair formS
For little can we say we liveT
Until the heart is warmS
