The Two Masks Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD CECEDFDG

Melpomene among her livid peopleA
Ere stroke of lyre upon Thaleia looksB
Warned by old contests that one museful rippleA
Along those lips of rose with tendril hooksB
Forebodes disturbance in the springs of pathosC
Perchance may change of masks midway demandD
Albeit the man rise mountainous as AthosC
The woman wild as Cape Leucadia standD

For this the Comic Muse exacts of creaturesC
Appealing to the fount of tears that theyE
Strive never to outleap our human featuresC
And do Right Reason's ordinance obeyE
In peril of the hum to laughter nighestD
But prove they under stress of action's fireF
Nobleness to that test of Reason highestD
She bows she waves them for the loftier lyreG
