The Three Maidens Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CBCB DBDB EBEB FBFB GBGB

There were three maidens met on the highwayA
The sun was down the night was lateB
And two sang loud with the birds of MayA
O the nightingale is merry with its mateB
-
Said they to the youngest Why walk you there so stillC
The land is dark the night is lateB
O but the heart in my side is illC
And the nightingale will languish for its mateB
-
Said they to the youngest Of lovers there is storeD
The moon mounts up the night is lateB
O I shall look on man no moreD
And the nightingale is dumb without its mateB
-
Said they to the youngest Uncross your arms and singE
The moon mounts high the night is lateB
O my dear lover can hear no thingE
And the nightingale sings only to its mateB
-
They slew him in revenge and his true love was his lureF
The moon is pale the night is lateB
His grave is shallow on the moorF
O the nightingale is dying for its mateB
-
His blood is on his breast and the moss roots at his hairG
The moon is chill the night is lateB
But I will lie beside him thereG
O the nightingale is dying for its mateB
