Now the frog all lean and weakA
Yawning from his famished sleepB
Water in the ditch doth seekA
Fast as he can stretch and leapB
Marshy king cups burning nearC
Tell him 'tis the sweet o' the yearC
-
Now the ant works up his moundD
In the mouldered piny soilE
And above the busy groundD
Takes the joy of earnest toilE
Dropping pine cones dry and sereC
Warn him 'tis the sweet o' the yearC
-
Now the chrysalis on the wallF
Cracks and out the creature springsG
Raptures in his body smallF
Wonders on his dusty wingsG
Bells and cups all shining clearC
Show him 'tis the sweet o' the yearC
-
Now the brown bee wild and wiseH
Hums abroad and roves and roamsI
Storing in his wealthy thighsH
Treasure for the golden combsI
Dewy buds and blossoms dearC
Whisper 'tis the sweet o' the yearC
-
Now the merry maids so fairJ
Weave the wreaths and choose the queenK
Blooming in the open airJ
Like fresh flowers upon the greenK
Spring in every thought sincereC
Thrills them with the sweet o' the yearC
-
Now the lads all quick and gayL
Whistle to the browsing herdsM
Or in the twilight pastures greyL
Learn the use of whispered wordsM
First a blush and then a tearJ
And then a smile i' the sweet o' the yearC
-
Now the May fly and the fishN
Play again from noon to nightO
Every breeze begets a wishN
Every motion means delightO
Heaven high over heath and mereC
Crowns with blue the sweet o' the yearC
-
Now all Nature is aliveP
Bird and beetle man and moleQ
Bee like goes the human hiveP
Lark like sings the soaring soulQ
Hearty faith and honest cheerC
Welcome in the sweet o' the yearC
