The State Of Age Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBACDEFFE

Rub thou thy battered lamp nor claim nor begA
Honours from aught about thee Light the youngB
Thy frame is as a dusty mantle hungB
O grey one pendant on a loosened pegA
Thou art for this our life an ancient eggA
Or a tough bird thou hast a rudderless tongueB
Turning dead trifles like the cock of dungB
Which runs Time's contrast to thy halting legA
Nature it is most sure not thee admiresC
But hast thou in thy season set her firesD
To burn from Self to Spirit through the lashE
Honoured the sons of Earth shall hold thee highF
Yea to spread light when thy proud letter IF
Drops prone and void as any thoughtless dashE
