A Princess in the eastern taleA
Paced thro' a marble city paleA
And saw in ghastly shapes of stoneB
The sculptured life she breathed aloneB
-
Saw where'er her eye might rangeC
Herself the only child of changeC
And heard her echoed footfall chimeD
Between Oblivion and TimeD
-
And in the squares where fountains playedE
And up the spiral balustradeE
Along the drowsy corridorsF
Even to the inmost sleeping floorsG
-
Surveyed in wonder chilled with dreadE
The seemingness of Death not deadE
Life's semblance but without its stormH
And silence frosting every formH
-
Crowned figures cold and grouping slavesI
Like suddenly arrested wavesI
About to sink about to riseJ
Strange meaning in their stricken eyesJ
-
And cloths and couches live with flameK
Of leopards fierce and lions tameK
And hunters in the jungle reedE
Thrown out by sombre glowing bredeE
-
Dumb chambers hushed with fold on foldE
And cumbrous gorgeousness of goldE
White casements o'er embroidered seatsL
Looking on solitudes of streetsL
-
On palaces and column'd towersF
Unconscious of the stony hoursF
Harsh gateways startled at a soundE
With burning lamps all burnish'd roundE
-
Surveyed in awe this wealth and stateE
Touched by the finger of a FateE
And drew with slow awakening fearM
The sternness of the atmosphereM
-
And gradually with stealthier footE
Became herself a thing as muteE
And listened while with swift alarmN
Her alien heart shrank from the charmN
-
Yet as her thoughts dilating roseO
Took glory in the great reposeO
And over every postured formH
Spread lava like and brooded warmH
-
And fixed on every frozen faceP
Beheld the record of its raceP
And in each chiselled feature knewQ
The stormy life that once blushed thro'M
-
The ever present of the pastE
There written all that lightened lastE
Love anguish hope disease despairM
Beauty and rage all written thereM
-
Enchanted Passions whose pale doomR
Is never flushed by blight or bloomR
But sentinelled by silent orbsP
Whose light the pallid scene absorbsP
-
Like such a one I pace alongS
This City with its sleeping throngS
Like her with dread and awe that turnsP
To rapture and sublimely yearnsP
-
For now the quiet stars look downT
On lights as quiet as their ownB
The streets that groaned with traffic showU
As if with silence paved belowU
-
The latest revellers are at peaceP
The signs of in door tumult ceaseP
From gay saloon and low resortE
Comes not one murmur or reportE
-
The clattering chariot rolls not byV
The windows show no waking eyeV
The houses smoke not and the airM
Is clear and all the midnight fairM
-
The centre of the striving worldE
Round which the human fate is curledE
To which the future crieth wildE
Is pillowed like a cradled childE
-
The palace roof that guards a crownT
The mansion swathed in dreamy downT
Hovel court and alley shedE
Sleep in the calmness of the deadE
-
Now while the many motived heartE
Lies hushed fireside and busy martE
And mortal pulses beat the tuneW
That charms the calm cold ear o' the moonW
-
Whose yellowing crescent down the WestE
Leans listening now when every breastE
Its basest or its purest heavesP
The soul that joys the soul that grievesP
-
While Fame is crowning happy browsP
That day will blindly scorn while vowsP
Of anguished love long hidden speakX
From faltering tongue and flushing cheekX
-
The language only known to dreamsP
Rich eloquence of rosy themesP
While on the Beauty's folded mouthY
Disdain just wrinkles baby youthZ
-
While Poverty dispenses almsP
To outcasts bread and healing balmsP
While old Mammon knows himselfA2
The greatest beggar for his pelfA2
-
While noble things in darkness gropeB2
The Statesman's aim the Poet's hopeB2
The Patriot's impulse gathers fireM
And germs of future fruits aspireM
-
Now while dumb nature owns its linksP
And from one common fountain drinksP
Methinks in all around I seeP
This Picture in EternityP
-
A marbled City planted thereM
With all its pageants and despairM
A peopled hush a Death not deadE
But stricken with Medusa's headE
-
And in the Gorgon's glance for ayeV
The lifeless immortalityP
Reveals in sculptured calmness allC2
Its latest life beyond recallC2
