He who has looked upon EarthB
Deeper than flower and fruitC
Losing some hue of his mirthB
As the tree striking rock at the rootC
Unto him shall the marvellous taleD
Of Callistes more humanly comeE
With the touch on his breast than a hailD
From the markets that humE

Now the youth footed swift to the dawnF
'Twas the season when wintertideC
In the higher rock hollows updrawnF
Leaves meadows to bud and he spiedC
By light throwing shallow shadeC
Between the beam and the gloomG
Sicilian Enna whose MaidC
Such aspect wears in her bloomG
Underneath since the CharioteerH
Of Darkness whirled her awayI
On a reaped afternoon of the yearH
Nigh the poppy droop of DayI
O and naked of her all dustC
The majestic Mother and NurseJ
Ringing cries to the God the JustC
Curled the land with the blight of her curseJ
Recollected of this glad isleK
Still quaking But now more fairH
And momently fraying the whileK
The veil of the shadows thereH
Soft Enna that prostrate griefL
Sang through and revealed round the vinesM
Bronze orange the crisp young leafL
The wheat blades tripping in linesM
A hue unillumined by sunF
Of the flowers flooding grass as from fountsM
All the penetrable dunF
Of the morn ere she mountsM

Nor had saffron and sapphire and redC
Waved aloft to their sisters belowN
When gaped by the rock channel headC
Of the lake black a cave at one blowN
Reverberant over the plainF
A sound oft fearfully swungO
For the coming of wrathful rainF
And forth like the dragon tongueO
Of a fire beaten flat by the galeD
But more as the smoke to beholdC
A chariot burst Then a wailD
Quivered high of the love that would foldC
Bliss immeasurable bigger than heartC
Though a God's and the wheels were stayedC
And the team of the chariot swartC
Reared in marble the six dismayedC
Like hoofs that by night plashing seaM
Curve and ramp from the vast swan waveP
For lo the Great Mother SheM
And Callistes gazed he gaveP
His eyeballs up to the sightC
The embrace of the Twain of whomG
To men are their day their nightC
Mellow fruits and the shearing tombG
Our Lady of the SheavesM
And the Lily of Hades the SweetC
Of Enna he saw through leavesM
The Mother and Daughter meetC
They stood by the chariot wheelQ
Embraced very tall most likeR
Fellow poplars wind taken that reelQ
Down their shivering columns and strikeR
Head to head crossing throats and apartC
For the feast of the look they drewH
Which Darkness no longer could thwartC
And they broke together anewH
Exulting to tears flower and budC
But the mate of the Rayless was graveP
She smiled like Sleep on its floodC
That washes of all we craveP
Like the trance of eyes awakeS
And the spirit enshrouded she castC
The wan underworld on the lakeS
They were so and they passedC

He could see and surviveP

Now the youth was not ware of the beamsM
With the grasses intertwinedC
For each thing seen as in dreamsM
Came stepping to rear through his mindC
Till it struck his remembered prayerH
To be witness of this which had flownF
Like a smoke melted thinner than airH
That the vacancy doth disownF
And viewing a maiden he thoughtC
It might now be morn and afarH
Within him the memory wroughtC
Of a something that slipped from the carH
When those the august moved byA
Perchance a scarf and perchanceM
This maiden She did not flyA
Nor started at his advanceM
She looked as when infinite thirstC
Pants pausing to bless the springsM
Refreshed unsated Then firstC
He trembled with awe of the thingsM
He had seen and he did transferH
Divining and doubting in turnF
His reverence unto herH
Nor asked what he crouched to learnF
The whence of her whither and whyA
Her presence there and her nameU
Her parentage under which skyA
Her birth and how hither she cameU
So young a virgin aloneF
Unfriended having no fearH
As Oreads have no moanF
Like the lost upon earth no tearH
Not a sign of the torch in the bloodC
Though her stature had reached the heightC
When mantles a tender rudC
In maids that of youths have sightC
If maids of our seed they beP
For he said A glad vision art thouV
And she answered him Thou to meP
As men utter a vowV

Then said she quick as the criesM
Of the rainy cranes Light lightC
And Helios rose in her eyesM
That were full as the dew balls brightC
Relucent to him as dewsM
Unshaded Breathing she sentC
Her voice to the God of the MuseM
And along the vale it wentC
Strange to hear not thin not shrillW
Sweet but no young maid's throatC
The echo beyond the hillW
Ran falling on half the noteC
And under the shaken groundC
Where the Hundred headed groansM
By the roots of great AEtna boundC
As of him were hollow tonesM
Of wondering roared a taleD
Repeated to sunless hallsM
But now off the face of the valeD
Shadows fled in a breath and the wallsM
Of the lake's rock head were goldC
And the breast of the lake that swellX
Of the crestless long wave rolledC
To shore bubble pebble and shellX
A morning of radiant lidsM
O'er the dance of the earth opened wideC
The bees chose their flowers the snub kidsM
Upon hindlegs went sportive or pliedC
Nosing hard at the dugs to be filledC
There was milk honey music to makeS
Up their branches the little birds billedC
Chirrup drone bleat and buzz ringed the lakeS
O shining in sunlight chiefP
After water and water's caressM
Was the young bronze orange leafP
That clung to the tree as a tressM
Shooting lucid tendrils to wedC
With the vine hook tree or poleY
Like Arachne launched out on her threadC
Then the maiden her dusky stoleY
In the span of the black starred zoneF
Gathered up for her footing fleetC
As one that had toil of her ownF
She followed the lines of wheatC
Tripping straight through the fields green bladesM
To the groves of olive greyI
Downy grey golden tinged and to gladesM
Where the pear blossom thickens the sprayI
In a night like the snow packed stormZ
Pear apple almond plumE
Not wintry now pushing warmZ
And she touched them with finger and thumbE
As the vine hook closes she smiledC
Recounting again and againF
Corn wine fruit oil like a childC
With the meaning known to menF
For hours in the track of the ploughV
And the pruning knife she steppedC
And of how the seed works and of howV
Yields the soil she seemed adeptC
Then she murmured that name of the dearthB
The Beneficent Hers who badeC
Our husbandmen sow for the birthB
Of the grain making earth full gladC
She murmured that Other's the dirgeA2
Of life light for whose dark lapB2
Our locks are clipped on the vergeA2
Of the realm where runs no sapB2
She said We have looked on bothC2
And her eyes had a wavering beamD2
Of various lights like the frothE2
Of the storm swollen ravine streamD2
In flame of the bolt What linksM
Were these which had made him her friendC
He eyed her as one who drinksM
And would drink to the endC

-
Now the meadows with crocus besprentC
And the asphodel woodsides she leftC
And the lake slopes the ravishing scentC
Of narcissus dark sweet for the cleftC
That tutors the torrent brookF2
Delaying its forceful spleenF
With many a wind and crookF2
Through rock to the broad ravineF
By the hyacinth bells in the brakesM
And the shade loved white windflower half hidC
And the sun loving lizards and snakesM
On the cleft's barren ledges that slidC
Out of sight smooth as waterdrops allG2
At a snap of twig or barkH2
In the track of the foreign foot fallG2
She climbed to the pineforest darkH2
Overbrowing an emerald chineF
Of the grass billows Thence as a wreathI2
Running poplar and cypress to pineF
The lake banks are seen and beneathI2
Vineyard village groves rivers towers farmsM
The citadel watching the bayI
The bay with the town in its armsM
The town shining white as the sprayI
Of the sapphire sea wave on the rockJ2
Where the rock stars the girdle of seaP
White ringed as the midday flockJ2
Clipped by heat rings the round of the treeP
That hour of the piercing shaftC
Transfixes bough shadows confusedC
In veins of fire and she laughedC
With her quiet mouth amusedC
To seM
