The Century Of Garibaldi Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBACDDC EEEE FGGF GGGG HEEH IEEI FGGJ KGGK EEEE LEEL EGGE MNNM

We who have seen Italia in the throesA
Half risen but to be hurled to ground and nowB
Like a ripe field of wheat where once drove ploughB
All bounteous as she is fair we think of thoseA
Who blew the breath of life into her frameC
Cavour Mazzini Garibaldi ThreeD
Her Brain her Soul her Sword and set her freeD
From ruinous discords with one lustrous aimC
-
That aim albeit they were of minds diverseE
Conjoined them not to strive without surceaseE
For them could be no babblement of peaceE
While lay their country under Slavery's curseE
-
The set of torn Italia's glorious dayF
Was ever sunrise in each filial breastG
Of eagle beaks by righteousness unblestG
They felt her pulsing body made the preyF
-
Wherefore they struck and had to count their deadG
With bitter smile of resolution nervedG
To try new issues holding faith unswervedG
Promise they gathered from the rich blood shedG
-
In them Italia visible to us thenH
As living rose for proof that huge brute ForceE
Has never being from celestial sourceE
And is the lord of cravens not of menH
-
Now breaking up the crust of temporal strifeI
Who reads their acts enshrined in History seesE
That Tyrants were the RevolutionariesE
The Rebels men heart vowed to hallowed lifeI
-
Pure as the Archangel's cleaving Darkness thro'F
The Sword he sees the keen unwearied SwordG
A single blade against a circling hordeG
And aye for Freedom and the trampled fewJ
-
The cry of Liberty from dungeon cellK
From exile was his God's command to smiteG
As for a swim in sea he joined the fightG
With radiant face full sure that he did wellK
-
Behold a warrior dealing mortal strokesE
Whose nature was a child's amid his foesE
A wary trickster at the battle's closeE
No gentler friend this leopard dashed with foxE
-
Down the long roll of History will runL
The story of these deeds and speed his raceE
Beneath defeat more hotly to embraceE
The noble cause and trust to another sunL
-
And lo that sun is in Italia's skiesE
This day by grace of his good sword in partG
It beckons her to keep a warrior heartG
For guard of beauty all too sweet a prizeE
-
Earth gave him blessed be the Earth that gaveM
Earth's Master crowned his honest work on earthN
Proudly Italia names his place of birthN
The bosom of Humanity his graveM
