From twig to twig the spider weavesB
At noon his webbing fineC
So near to mute the zephyrs fluteD
That only leaflets danceE
The sun draws out of hazel leavesB
A smell of woodland wineC
I wake a swarm to sudden stormF
At any step's advanceE

Along my path is bugloss blueG
The star with fruit in mossH
The foxgloves drop from throat to topI
A daily lesser bellJ
The blackest shadow nurse of dewG
Has orange skeins acrossH
And keenly red is one thin threadK
That flashing seems to swellJ

IIIA
-
My world I note ere fancy comesL
Minutest hushed observeM
What busy bits of motioned witsN
Through antlered mosswork striveO
But now so low the stillness humsL
My springs of seeing swerveM
For half a wink to thrill and thinkP
The woods with nymphs aliveO

IVO
-
I neighbour the invisibleQ
So close that my consentR
Is only asked for spirits maskedS
To leap from trees and flowersT
And this because with them I dwellJ
In thought while calmly bentR
To read the lines dear Earth designsU
Shall speak her life on oursT

VO
-
Accept she says it is not hardV
In woods but she in townsW
Repeats accept and have we weptX
And have we quailed with fearsY
Or shrunk with horrors sure rewardZ
We have whom knowledge crownsW
Who see in mould the rose unfoldA2
The soul through blood and tearsB2
