October 21, 1905 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCAC DEDEFDF GHGHIGI JKBKLKL MNONPOP

The hundred years have passed and heA
Whose name appeased a nation's fearsB
As with a hand laid over seaA
To thunder through the foeman's earsB
Defeat before his blast of fireC
Lives in the immortalityA
That poets dream and noblest souls desireC
-
Never did nation's need evokeD
Hero like him for aid the whileE
A Continent was cannon smokeD
Or peace in slavery this one IsleE
Reflecting Nature this one manF
Her sea hound and her mortal strokeD
With war worn body aye in battle's vanF
-
And do we love him well as wellG
As he his country we may greetH
With hand on steel our passing bellG
Nigh on the swing for prelude sweetH
To the music heard when his last breathI
Hung on its ebb beside the knellG
And VICTORY in his ear sang gracious DeathI
-
Ah day of glory day of tearsJ
Day of a people bowed as oneK
Behold across those hundred yearsB
The lion flash of gun at gunK
Our bitter pride our love bereavedL
What pall of cloud o'ercame our sunK
That day to bear his wreath the end achievedL
-
Joy that no more with murder's frownM
The ancient rivals bark apartN
Now Nelson to brave France is shownO
A hero after her own heartN
And he now scanning that quick raceP
To whom through life his glove was thrownO
Would know a sister spirit to embraceP
